TITLE How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, bright morning star! For you have said in your heart, I will praise my throne above the stars of God: I will rise above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High. Yet you have been brought down to hell, to the depths of the grave.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARK
Faint sounds - a rustle of feathers and the occasional brush of cloth over metal. The voice of the FALLEN LUCIFER cuts the dark, musical but resigned, and weary.
FALLEN LUCIFER The light ... I remember the light best. It had its own way of falling in Paradise; shadows were brushed rather than cast, and warmth was in every path it touched.
EXT. HEAVEN - DAY
A white marble path leads from a white marble forum out into a vista of meadows and orchards. The ANGELS - paragons of innocence - walk amongst the flowers, pick the fruit, and chase one another above the trees. An almost invisible glow radiates from the entire landscape.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) I remember walking in the orchards. The wind and the angels' wings rustled each leaf, and I'd watch the light dance across the tree trunks.A lattice of leaves move against the sky, and sunlight filters through each gap.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) I'd always loved sunlight, the few minutes before dawn when the sky burns...
EXT. HEAVEN - SUNRISE
The horizon sky is red around a dark gold sun, just beginning to rise.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARK
FALLEN LUCIFER I could almost touch it.Sounds of effort. A pale light grows, outlining a hand pressed hard against a mirrored wall, nails bitten right down and trails of blood dried on each finger. With an expulsion of breath, the light dies.
EXT. MEADOW, HEAVEN - DAY
The meadows and orchards are abandoned, but still gleam as if lit from within; the afternoon sun casts a yellow tinge. A seven-year-old angel's feet walk through the grass the YOUNG LUCIFER, green and revelling in sunshine. At his every footfall, narcissus flowers sprout, blossom and wilt. A breeze stirs the plants and the feathers of the angel's wings.
He stops. Flowers continue to bloom around his feet.
Around a pool of water, clusters of narcissus buds have grown wild.
YOUNG LUCIFER runs. The flowers at his feet shrivel and die.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - DAY
Kneeling by the pool, the child's fingers stroke a bud into opening. The blossom stretches to his touch; the petal plucks itself from the stem and flutters down into the water.
Ripples briefly obscure the child, staring at the surface of the pool, at the long red hair and golden eyes. A breeze disturbs the water and lifts his hair the angel recoils slightly.
YOUNG LUCIFER has never seen his reflection before.
Gradually, the boy's curiosity draws him back; tracing the contours of his face, he studies his reflection.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) They called me the Morning Star, the brightest in the sky, and the most beautiful.YOUNG LUCIFER's hand reaches out, outlining his image in the water and marring it.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) For the first time I saw why.The pool's surface smoothes itself before the angel's eyes. Staring, his lips lift in an almost-smile.
YOUNG LUCIFER (tentative) Ave...
EXT. MEADOW - DAY
Several years later. The meadows and orchards have not changed, nor have their occupants. The ANGELS are at their tasks: tending the orchards; growing flowers; lining clouds. One plays a lyre.
ANGELS (sung) The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want, fresh and green are the pastures where He gives me repose...A trail of wilted narcissus lead to LUCIFER, sitting by the pool of water. Every so often he grows another flower, but for the most part gazes at his reflection. He does not sing.
ANGELS ... He guides me along the right path, He is true to his name, if I should walk in the valley of darkness, no evil would I fear...Several ANGELS glance up from their tasks to stare at the boy. Their faces are concerned.
ANGELS ... my head You have anointed with oil, my cup is overflowing, surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life...LUCIFER shifts to catch the full sunlight on his shoulders; golden eyes stare back at him from the pool. A flower in hand, he skims its petals across the surface of the water, sending ripples over his reflection.
LUCIFER (warm) I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that bears fruit. ANGELS (sung) In the Lord's own house shall I dwell, for ever and ever...A soft chuckle and another ripple.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) Light came to mean more to me than anything. The sun reflected his eyes brighter than my own... I'd sit by the pond all day to watch them.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - DAY
LUCIFER lies on his stomach, chin propped over his hands, lips moving. His eyes remain fixed on the water.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) By night, the stars teased me with glimpses: a streak of skin; flecks of red hair, seen and gone. But I could see. That was enough.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - NIGHT
Leaning over the surface, LUCIFER strains to see in the darkness.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) I don't remember sleep, only waking to a red horizon, and the morning star. We watched it flare and slowly fade away.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - SUNRISE
LUCIFER sits by the pool, three fingers combing back and forth in the water, watching the sky turn all the colours of morning.
LUCIFER (murmur) Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from night, and let them serve as marks of the seasons...The morning star blinks and dwindles as the sun begins to rise; the angel basks in light and the first full glimpse of his reflection for the day.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) Every day and every night, no one knew how long I sat there, drinking his image from the water... I was parched.
EXT. OUTSIDE THE FORUM - DAY
THE SUMMONS, with no more to him than his message, walks off the steps of the forum and makes his way toward the meadows.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - DAY
LUCIFER's reflection. Its lips mime his words.
LUCIFER (v.o.) My own vineyard is mine to give, for those who tend its fruit...
EXT. MEADOW - DAY
THE SUMMONS walks through the grass
LUCIFER (v.o.) ... you who dwell in the gardens... and crushes a wilted narcissus flower underfoot.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - DAY
The reflection's lips mime.
LUCIFER (v.o.) ... let me hear your voice. Set me as a seal upon your heart LUCIFER looks up from the pool.
LUCIFER for love is strong as death.THE SUMMONS stares down at LUCIFER from across the pool, his shadow falling across the angel's reflection. The two stare at one another.
THE SUMMONS The Archangel Gabriel has summoned you.LUCIFER continues to stare.
THE SUMMONS He waits in the capitol. LUCIFER Why?THE SUMMONS stares, surprise slipping briefly over his features, before smoothing back into blankness.
He is not used to being questioned.
LUCIFER Why? THE SUMMONS ... the Archangel Gabriel has summ LUCIFER I know the Arch has called for a servant. Why me? THE SUMMONS The Arch is in need of assistance.LUCIFER stares at him.
THE SUMMONS You are awaited in the capit LUCIFER (slow and deliberate) Why me?A pause.
THE SUMMONS The Archangel Gabriel has summoned you.LUCIFER's reflection stares back at him.
THE SUMMONS He waits in the capitol.LUCIFER's reflection shakes his head slightly.
THE SUMMONS The Arch has need of assistance.A stronger shake of the head.
LUCIFER stares down into the water, shaking his head continuously.
LUCIFER (under his breath) Non... THE SUMMONS You are asked to attend him.LUCIFER looks up.
LUCIFER No.
EXT. POOL OF WATER - NIGHT
Lying on his stomach, perpendicular to the pool, LUCIFER gazes at his reflection. His fingers lightly trace the image in the water.
LUCIFER (sung softly) In trutina mentis dubia, fluctuant contraria, lascivus amor et pudicitia... but I choose what is before me, and take upon myself the sweet yoke.He leans further over the pool and touches his features to his reflection's...
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) After all that has passed Its forehead...
LUCIFER and all I've endured And mouth.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) ... do I still love you?

INT. HALL OF JUDGEMENT - LIGHT
GOD sits on his throne and THE SEVEN Angels of the Revelation sit below.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) No one who does not love God above all things can be allowed to stay in Paradise.Standing before them, flanked by a GUARD, LUCIFER shouts at all and sundry.
LUCIFER ... we were given free will, all of us, and yet I'm on trial for choosing to use it?! We're free to do whatever we will here, but only if we bow down like slaves?! ...GOD and THE SEVEN appear impervious to the angel's words.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) (sigh) A boy will say many things in his youthfulness. LUCIFER (vehement, to GOD) ... yet we all must fall down and worship you! Your love of your own image exceeds mine what right have you to judge me?!The FIFTH ANGEL signals to the GUARD, who knocks LUCIFER to the ground.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) None who've heard the voice of God can describe its sound. Anger I expected, but sadness? (saddened) Lux-ferre, I thought you beautiful even an hour before this darkness consumed your heart. As the verdict is given, THE SEVEN bow their heads; LUCIFER's GUARD hauls him to his feet.
FIFTH ANGEL Lucifer, son of the morning, we denounce you for the sins of pride and high sacrilege. We entrust your punishment to the Archangel Michael.
INT. HOLDING CELL - SEMI-DARK
A white wall. Sounds of a chained struggle, interspersed with gagged screams. A line of blood hits the wall.
A. MICHAEL (intoned) Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or sit in the seat of the scornful. The ARCHANGEL MICHAEL stands straight and blank.
A. MICHAEL But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and he will be like a tree planted by rivers of water; his leaf will not wither.Kneeling, LUCIFER's ankles are manacled to the floor, his shoulders strain, his wrists are tied over his head. His back arches. A large amount of blood trails down his body and is matted in his hair.
A. MICHAEL The wicked are not so: they are the chaff which the wind drives away. The wicked will not stand in judgement of the righteous, nor sinners in the congregation of the pure. The Archangel takes a cross-shaped brand from a raised fireplace.
A. MICHAEL The wicked will perish. The sound of burning flesh and agonised screams. LUCIFER's back convulses violently.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - LIGHT
FALLEN LUCIFER is thrown into a room. He raises himself up long enough to see that he is surrounded by mirrors, before the room is plunged into darkness.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARK
The sound of a lock being turned and many bolts sliding into place.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARKNESS
FALLEN LUCIFER kneels where he was thrown.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) Not many face the long dark. Even the clouds gave enough light in Paradise, but this... this is the black of the tomb; the darkness itself smells like death. In silence, he shouts and hits the walls.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) God knows many things, and only God knows how long I shouted defiance against Him. A vague hope it was, nothing more shout loud enough and someone would come to me.Tearing at his wings and hair in desperation, FALLEN LUCIFER sobs wildly on the floor.
F. LUCIFER Darkness swallowed my rebellion, and eventually the hysteria that replaced it, however long I lay sobbing for my image. It surrounds me but I can't see it... the Arch chose his punishment well.Exhausted, he collapses into sleep.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) I long for it. I long for it... but I don't want to see. Darkness has been with me so long, the memories blur together.
(pause) Do I still love you? ... I don't know.Wings enclosing him, FALLEN LUCIFER huddles in a corner, head buried against his knees.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) Time became a single second, drawn out for eternity, space the walls that surround me. How long had I waited in this mirrored darkness before I felt it His head jerks up.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) the stirring in my blood that all the angels felt. How long before I knew the armies of the Beast had finally begun to move?
EXT. FIELD OF ARMAGEDDON - LIGHT
The ANGELS of God and the daevas of the Beast in battle.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) A year or a thousand the Armageddon was fought; I felt every charge from the first to the final, I felt the sword in my hand that slew the Beast.A small host of ANGELS cut through the last ring of guards and slay the Beast. The mostly slaughtered army of daevas wither into dust.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARKNESS
Once more, the FALLEN LUCIFER sits huddled in a corner. His wings are loosely drawn around him, and his head rests back against the wall.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) Time means nothing when there is nothing, and I have nothing but the time of Judgement to wait for... It draws near; the Book of Life is being written. Will the Morning Star's name be found on its pages? ... that choice has always been mine.A pause.
FALLEN LUCIFER (sung) When I've been here ten thousand years A sound.
FALLEN LUCIFER (mutter) ... how sweet the sound.
EXT. DOOR - LIGHT
On the door is a depressed handprint, covered in runic symbols. A hand presses against the lock and begins to turn it with some difficulty.
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - DARK
The sound of receding bolts.
FALLEN LUCIFER ... was blind, but now...The door is pushed open. The flood of reflected light blinds.
DISSOLVE TO:
INT. MIRRORED ROOM - LIGHT
A YOUNG ANGEL stands hesitant in the doorway, staring.
On the floor, amongst ancient feathers and bits of torn cloth, FALLEN LUCIFER gradually pushes himself to his knees, eyes fixed on his reflection in the mirror before him.
Studying the image, his fingers trace the contours of his face it is severely scarred. Eventually, he presses his forehead branded with the cross to the mirror, staring into the gold eyes.
FALLEN LUCIFER (murmur) Meus lux...Beat.
F. LUCIFER (v.o.) My light...
