welcome

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Hanfic Awards for Literary Merit. You may be wondering how this all came about -- it's not as though we need any more fanfic awards. So here are Jenn and Sab to tell you all about it.
Despite our involvement in the 1999/2000 awards, all credit/blame for the awards should be directed to Jamie. Jamie came up with the idea of revolutionising the award system by including a panel of judges in an attempt to remove the popularity contest that many feel had dominated previous awards. It started involving the three of the founders of the Stories Will Be Told yahoo club, a little well-known club dedicated mainly to Sab, Jenn and now Hanna talking aimlessly on the message board occasionally on Hanson, fanfic, but more normally plain rambling.
In the beginning, there were three. However, due to 'unforeseen circumstances' (a phrase well known to followers of the first awards) the number of judges dropped to two, built back up to three with the help of Lee, most well known for her contribution to the hanfic world, the Hanson Advent Calendar. More 'unforeseen circumstances' meant that the job of posting the awards and designing the graphics fell to Sab. Lauryn was one of the followers who waited throughout all the unforeseen circumstances and persisted in annoying Sab to a point where she posted the results to get her to shut up.
And so comes 2000, or what will be 2001 by the time we get ourselves organised. In typical Jenn and Sab fashion, Sab decided Jenn was helping and she had no choice in it (something that has happened in reverse several times), leading to many long phone calls as we struggled to try and organise the awards and actually get along. Sab, after receiving the offer of hosting from Lauryn and Aoë, used her extraordinary powers of persuasion (i.e. telling people what to do) and decided Lauryn was now a judge. After revelling in the Australian domination of the awards (something heightened by the excitement of the Olympics) and the final exams of Jenn and Lauryn, we've finally got something resembling ideas for the awards.
Some new categories have been introduced to these awards, probably the result of our growing obsession with the Moffatts, leading to the introduction of an award for the best crossover Moffson story. A greater emphasis has also been placed on the Hanson family, with the inclusion of categories for siblings and parents as well as gender distinctions between non-Hanson characters. Other new categories include best romance story and writer, best letter/journal story, best experimental story (a category Jenn will find a meaning for soon), best use of song, best beginning and ending, comic writer, new writer, writing style and hanfic site.
Hopefully this year we will not encounter any 'unforeseen circumstances' and won't be forced to do what Hanson did with TTA and continually break promises of release dates. But hey, if you've gotta copy someone, you might as well copy Hanson. As long as it's not Taylor's leather pants.

info

These awards are NOT judged on the number of votes received for a particular story. Nominees and final winners are decided purely on literary merit. When dealing on equal terms however, preference has been given to more recent stories over older works.

The decision of the judges is FINAL. No negotiations will be entered into, any and all flames will be ignored.

thank-yous

To Aoë Lauren, for finding room for us originally on unlucky.net
To Laura and Llamaesque, for writing editorials for us, and to Llama for coming to our rescue, offering precious hf.c space when unlucky.net closed down. A thousand thanks, we love you both :-)
To every hanfic author, past and present, who've made these awards possible.
And to Jamie. . . .

Jamie isn't only the creator of these awards and a great writer. She's also an incredible person, always there when we needed her, even if it was only to add random comments about how wonderful Ike was. Her amazing ability to organise and create interesting ideas just added to her overall character.
From the two of us, we'd just like to say thank you, for everything that you've given us, for the continual inspiration, wonderful friendship and loads of fun. Even now, we can both re-read the old messages of the club and remember the weird randomness that dominated the club and all our conversations when the three of us were posting. We will always love you Jamie.
