So far, this is my favorite
Hanfic, period. I'll admit I haven't read that much as of yet, having only just
put my toe in this universe about a month ago, but I have read quite of bit of
fanfic in other fandoms, and this one is decidedly a standout. Reasons for that
are as follows:
The plotline and story idea are very original - none of that Mary Sue nonsense.
I don't want to give anything away, but I also liked the way the story seemed to
go in one direction at the beginning, and then ten chapters in just totally
turned around. That kind of plotting, making everything seem normal and then
backflipping it, all the time tying up the loose ends so nicely that it makes
sense even when you can't see it coming, is really tricky to pull off, so I
applaud.
Next, the character development is brilliant. It's sort of difficult for me to
put my finger on exactly what makes for good character development, but I will
say I was impressed with the way Jessica was portrayed. Again, I haven't read
much in this fandom, but I'd venture to say it's rare for one of the younger,
less famous Hanson siblings to be brought into the spotlight so much, and so
well.
I really liked the way Taylor was portrayed too, not just the character in
general, but the way he was isolated through the rough section of the story. As
a reader, all you see is what the rest of the family sees: he's getting more and
more withdrawn, going out on his own and shutting himself off from the people
who really care about him. And you don't see the narrative from his perspective
until he starts to come around again; I just think that point of view gets the
point across really well.
I don't want to ramble too much, and I have a feeling a lot of the people on
this forum have probably read "The Quiet One" already, but I felt like
it deserved its own thread.
