“A Man on the Moon” was an unexpected wonder to me. I clicked on Chapter One anticipating a bland and typical Hanson drama. As I read, I kept waiting for the teenage neighbor to move in next to Hanson and slowly steal one of their hearts. I waited for unrealistic quotes by the young Hanson siblings and the poor grammar that I have unfortunately come accustom to in the world of Hanfiction. Let’s face it; the quality of some stories is downright poor.

“A Man on the Moon” proved me and my notions wrong. I came out of it not knowing how to react. A part of me felt like laughing. The wit in this story is unbelievable. As Zac Hanson narrates the story, his dry humor and cracks towards Isaac’s promiscuous ways and Taylor’s feminine tendencies had me laughing out loud.

But this is a drama and it pulled on my heart as well. Each brother has a secret they desperately try to keep from each other. As the secrets slowly unfolded, I felt pain for each brother and his tragedy. I can guarantee all Hanson fans can relate to this work in some way. Whether you have isolated yourself from the outside world like Zac, withdrawn yourself from your family like Isaac, or made everyone you know tip toe around you like Taylor, there will be an element of this story that you can understand. You will experience find deep empathy for the Hanson brothers.

Lastly, I experienced a feeling of astonishment. How did I not recognize the secrets before the last chapter? The clues were abundant- scattered throughout the story. As I look back on the story, it all comes together now. It is like when you watch “A Sixth Sense” and then get to look back at all the traces of the color red in the movie in awe. This story provokes that same feeling.

I wish I could tell you other incredible stories this author has written, but this seems to be the only one so far. The author keeps herself private so for all I know she could be a well-known Hanfiction author already.

I wouldn’t say this is a love story though there are aspects of one in it. I wouldn’t say it’s a story solely about loss, but you find yourself grieving. It is certainly not just a cheerful comedy either. I am unable to define the genre of “A Man on the Moon” but I know as people continue to discover this gem, it will only become more and more of a cherished story in the world of Hanfiction.
