The Music behind the fiction

Phil Collins: man or god?

This is beyond random, I know, but I just felt the need to share how I came to find the songs I used to describe some of the key points in the Marissa/Taylor thing. No, I'm not really a Phil Collins fan. In fact, I'm rather ambivalent about the man.
But as I was writing this story I was listening to an Easy Listening station (blech, I know it's scary but I'm from Vermont and it was either that or country, which is blech squared).
I had just gotten to the dance and was sitting there thinking that I needed an excellent song to be in the background of thier big dancing scene. I thought for a few minutes, and then all of a sudden Groovy Kind of love by my man Phil came on and I melted. I mean really, the lyrics are precious beyond belief. So I had no choice. It went in.
The second song, whose identity I won't give away until it's been posted, is also by Phil. I was once again stumped looking for a good song with which to orchestrate a very important scene.
I pondered it for days, it kept me awake at night. Seriously, I was getting alarmed. One morning I was lying in bed trying to figure out what to do with my life before my alarm went off (Okay, llama-girl, you've got twenty seconds. Pick a profession and pick it now...). It was set on the radio, and this certain mushy Phil song came on that was beyond perfect. So I had no choice. It went in.
Phil Collins is apparently not only my guardian angel, but also has access to my mind. After these two fortuitious songs I dug up my parents copy of "Phil Collins, Serious Hits Live," and realized that I have never had an emotion not expressed in a Collins song.
Think about it. Really... he has created such undeniably awesome fair (admit it, you know you like it too) as: Take me home, two hearts, you can't hurry love, one more night, something in the air tonight, another day in paradise, and do you remember. And that's just on two mid eighties albums!! Coincidence? I think not...

Groovy kind of love

When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do is take a look at you then I’m not so blue.
When you’re close to me I can feel your heartbeat, I can hear you breathing in my ear.
Wouldn’t you agree baby you and me have got a groovy kind of love?
Anytime you want to you can turn me on to anything you want to, anytime at all.
When I kiss your lips I start to shiver, can’t control the quivering inside.
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me have got a groovy kind of love.
When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do is take a look at you then I’m not so blue.
When I’m in your arms nothing seems to matter my whole world could shatter, I don’t care.
Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me have got a groovy kind of love.

Against all Odds

How can I just let you walk away,
just let you leave without a trace,
when I stand here taking every breath for you,
You’re the only one who believed in me at all,
How can you just walk away from me when all I can do is watch you leave?
Cause we’ve shared the laughter and the pain, and even shared the tears.
You’re the only one who believed in me at all,
so take a look at me now, cause there’s just an empty space
and there’s nothing left here to remind me, just a memory of your face,
take a look at me now, cause there’s just an empty space,
and you coming back to me is against all odds and that’s what I’ve got to face.
I wish I could just make you turn around, turn around and see me cry.
There’s so much I need to say to you, so
many reasons why,
you’re the only one who believed in me at all.
So take a look at me now cause there’s just an empty space,
there’s nothing left here to remind me, just a memory of your face.
Take a look at me now cause there’s just an empty space,
but to wait for you is all I can do, and that’s what I’ve got to face.
Take a good look at me now, I’ll still be standing here,
and you coming back to me is against all odds and that’s a chance I’ve got to take.
Take a look at me now...

Billie Holiday: the next inspiration

Okay. So, my next story is coming along nicely. It's not close enough to being done for me to write a prologue, or even for me to know if there are going to be any Phil Collins-esque moments. I can tell you this much right now: it's a story. It's about a girl named Clio and her Hanson expierences. Our hero, Clio, is sixteen years old. She's very smart, and, thanks to having skipped two grades in high school she is a freshman at Oral Roberts University. Gee, you think. Oral Roberts. Where's that? Maybe... Tulsa? You got it! Anything much more than that is premature, but I can tell you that the song that inspired the title for this story is "Come Rain or Come Shine," by Billie Holliday.

Come Rain or Come Shine

I’m gonna love you like nobody's loved you
come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, and deep as a river
come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
it was just one of those things
but don’t ever bet me cause I’m gonna be true if you let me
you’re gonna love me like nobody's loved me,
come rain or come shine
Happy together, unhappy together, and won’t it be fine?
Days may be cloudy or sunny,
we’re in or we’re out of the money,
but I’m with you always
I’m with you rain or shine
I’m gonna love you like nobodies’ loved you
come rain or come shine
high as a mountian
deep as a river
come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things
But don’t ever bet me, cause I’m gonna be true if you let me
you’re gonna love me like nobody's loved me
come rain or come shine
happy together unhappy together
and won’t it be fine?
Days may be cloudy or sunny, we’re in or we’re out of the money
but I’ll love you always, I’m with you rain or shine
rain or shine
